Second wines are characterised by decidedly more affordable prices, while retaining the style of their 'big brothers'. The custom of producing second wines began as early as the 18th century in Bordeaux, initially to allow the first wine to be made from only the best grapes, without wasting the remaining grapes. Over time and as agronomic and oenological techniques progressed, second wines became a means for wineries to reach a wider and more varied audience, while preserving the style and high quality of the estate.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Box Verticale Bolgheri Rosso 'Le Serre Nuove' 2014 - 2015 - 2016 is a bundle comprising a wooden box containing three bottles of 'Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia' wine from as many different vintages, namely 2014, 2015 and 2016. The three wines come from a blend of Merlot (44-64%), Cabernet Sauvignon (17-34%), Petit Verdot (7-18%) and Cabernet Franc (9-12%). Each variety is vinified separately through temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks and 15 months' ageing in oak barriques, 25% new and 75% second-hand. Regardless of the vintage, this is a Bordeaux-style blend of excellent complexity and structure, endowed with deep fruity, balsamic and spicy overtones, more subtle and lively in the 2014, riper and softer in the 2015 and exceptionally rich and long-lived in the 2016.
